Steroids are responsible for enhancing performance of those who use them, but at what costs? Anabolic steroids, designed for medicinal uses, are sometimes used illegally to give an edge by maintaining and increasing masculine characteristics. Acting as a synthetic hormone, steroids increase muscle fiber and hence give an athletic or cosmetic advantage to those who use them. There are varying types of steroids that have differing amounts of the anabolic properties, but athletes are lured to those who have high amounts in order to increase muscle mass and strength (Anabolic Steroids 2). Other than use by athletes, there are those who use anabolic steroids for the cosmetic advantages. Anabolic steroids are built to mimic the bodybuilding traits of testosterone and some use them with the hopes of looking and feeling better about themselves (Anabolic Steroids 2).
