Pain Assessment and Management in Aging
The article explains pain management in the older adult population, which is growing at the fastest rate of any age group. The aging population is expected to reach 7.5 million by the year 2010 and more than double by the year 2020 (U.S.Census Bureau, 2004). In the article, the author explains that the prevalence of pain increases as adults grow older from chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, neuropathies, and osteoarthritis ( Hanks-Bell, 2004). However, the barriers to manage pain have also been growing due to concerns of healthcare professionals regarding regulatory scrutiny, patient and family members’ fears of drug addiction, and healthcare system’s concern of cultural biases regarding opioid use (Hanks-Bell, 2004).
