Violence All Around

In Wacquant’s “The Return of the Repressed”, he presents the idea that violence in structured societies stems from several sources. His notion is contrary to popular public belief, which mainly addresses/places blame upon lower class members of society who are seen as ‘criminal’ or delinquent. Wacquant’s concept of ‘violence from above’ challenges this misconception, distributing blame towards the failures of social institutions and their lack of ability in addressing growing social problems leading to disorder. ‘Violence from above’ can take on many forms and is exercised by a multitude of means, as it is typically a response to ‘disorders’ within society that usually affect lower, working class members, who in many instances belong to racial minority groups. This type of violence is carried out by several means, and is most prevalent in capitalist societies where survival and status in social structure is determined by wealth.
