The Old Testament also known as the Tanakh is the first book of the Christian canon, the Bible, and the only book of Judaism. It is broken into three books, the Torah or Law, the Nevi’im which talks about the Prophets, and the Khetubim which is the Writings. Overall, it tells the story of Israel from the beginning of the 4th century B.C.E. until the life of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament is a sacred scripture for people of both the Christian and Jewish faith.
The Old Testament was written by various groups of people over time and collected into the final book. The four commonly accepted sources that make it up are the Yahwist (9th century B.C.E.), the Elohist (8th century B.C.E.), the Deuteronomist (76th century B.C.E.), and the Priestly (65th century B.C.E.). These divisions are known as the Documentary Hypothesis.
