• Appeared in the 12th century and they were able to create a formidable empire. Onwards, no longer the Arabians or Persians but the Turks were the dominant force. They exercised dominion that extended over 3 continents (Asia, Europe and parts of Africa). A popular phrase, ‘from Danube in Hungary to the coast of the Indian Oceans’ this empire constituted of 20 different nationalities and 150 million people against the 4 million in Great Britain.
• How the Turks were able to stretch their empire?
o Better organization
o Cohesive society
o Efficient command system
• On these bases, the Turks were able to overcome most of the nationalists that were stretched out from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean. They were better organization and armed.
