During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s there was a call for better protection of minorities in the workplace. President John F. Kennedy, in his civil rights speech in June 1963, asked for legislation that would provide “the kind of equality of treatment which we would want for ourselves." After his assasanation President Lyndon B. Johnson took over and was gathering support from northern Democrats and Republicans to push Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law prohibited segregation in public schools, the workplace, and other public areas. Originally the law was created specifically for African-Americans, however, right before the bill was amended it was written in to include women and Caucasians. This law had immediate and long term effects on the entire country.
