What Can I Learn from Buddhism?
(Focusing on Zen Buddhism)
When I first heard that our new essay would need to be on a topic that we were very interested in, I immediately though of Zen Buddhism. I knew next to nothing about Buddhism, but I was interested in their religious practices in everyday life. I knew of meditation, but I didn’t know of any other practice in the religion that is beneficial, yet I had been told that the religion focuses on improving the self, rather than the whole. I already knew someone who had investigated Buddhism, and so I knew where I would obtain my first source.
I needed a general description of Buddhism because I knew nothing of it in the first place. The book Claire gave me was The World’s Religions by Huston Smith. In this book I read of generalized Buddhism with a small section on Zen Buddhism itself. I learned of the Buddhist equivalent of the Ten Commandments, which are the Five Precepts.
