This past summer I took my son, Michael, who was six, on a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. Since the divorce, and with me being an every other weekend mom, we haven’t had a whole lot of time to spend together. I was ecstatic when his father let me have Michael for a whole week! This was my opportunity to have a trip of a lifetime, and it was.
I was used to always being there for my son. One never went anywhere without the other. After Michael was born he was diagnosed with ADHD as well as a mild form of autism, known as Asperger Syndrome. This meant he had to have strict routines to follow while he was in his early developmental stages to avoid outbursts and behaviors. I was always the supporting parent while his father was in denial. These routines went on for about five years until his father and I divorced. Unfortunately his father retained custody. I did what I thought was right for Michael at that stage in his life, to leave him in a home and setting......
