Defining Romanticism

Romanticism, also known as “The Spirit of the Age,” was a period in British history where literature put on faces of diversity, controversy, complexity, and even intensity (The Norton Anthology of English Literature D: 6). Literary works by Wordsworth, Blake, Burns, Baillie, Wollstonecraft, Keats, Shelley, etc… caused great uproar in social, economic, political, and religious arenas. These artists wanted to challenge the status quo. They used well used as well as unconventional ways of writing.

The majority of literature during this time focused on the state of human nature (8). In poems such as William Wordsworth’s, Lyrical Ballads, he used what writers had earlier called “nature poetry” (11). Lyric poems were also very popular during this era (9). Writers wanted the readers to share traits with the poet as well as to participate in their feelings (9). With this in mind, Wordsworth also saw poetry as a “spontaneous overflow” of feelings (10-11). In......
