Halloween’s history can be traced 2, 000 years ago when the Celts resided in what is now Ireland, northern France and the U.K. During this time new years was celebrated on November 1--a significant day because it marked the end of the summer’s harvest and the beginning of winter. This time of year was typically associated with human death. The Celts believed that it was the night of October 31 that the boundary separating the worlds of the living and the dead became less apparent. A celebration called Sanhain was adopted. It was believed that on this night the ghosts of the dearly departed would again walk the earth. It was thought that these spirits damaged crops and caused trouble, pushing the Druids, or Celtic priests, to predict the future.
Huge sacred bonfires were crafted to commemorate the event. The burning of crops and animals was seen as a way to present sacrifices to the Celtic deities, During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, which typically......
