A right to fight
Keeping women as far away as possible from military combat has long been a widely controversial self-imposed duty of the federal government. Women have historically been thought of as fragile creatures in great need of protection, but this is the twenty-first century. “Since 1948, when Congress passed the Combat Exclusion Act, women have been barred from combat positions in the Air Force, Marines and Navy” (Knight). The Army, although not covered by the Act, maintains its own regulatory ban on women in combat roles. Since the enactment of the Act, both men and women have tried without much success to have this restriction repealed. Since the Act was passed, many military disciplines have been made available to women, but many others are still denied. “At present, 100 percent of Coast Guard jobs are open to women, 97 percent of Air Force jobs, 59 percent in the Navy, 52 percent in the Army and 20 percent in the Marines” (Knight).
