China’s Economic Struggle with the West: a Political Downfall
(Rough Draft)

In the beginning of the Ming Dynasty the only form of legal foreign trade was privately performed by traveling merchants from surrounding countries. This trade was strictly limited by the government however and these merchants were only permitted to enter China once every five to ten years. During the second half of the Ming Dynasty this highly restricted and periodic trading began to blossom into a consistent and profitable endeavor. As this trade increased and the country entered the sixteenth century, a major new participator arrived in China with huge anticipations and desires. The profit seeking Western world exploded on China with Portuguese vessels arriving in Canton and Fukienese ports in 1514.
