If a person were to give someone else the job that their closest and most trusted friend wanted there would be reasons why that friend would feel hurt, angered, and betrayed. However, for that friend to seek revenge and try to in a way destroy the other person’s life is pushing it a bit too far. This is what happens to Iago in the play Othello. Iago is upset at the fact Othello promoted Cassio over him because he felt that he was more qualified. While many believe Iago to be an honest and most trusted friend, he feels betrayed and angered when Othello does not promote him and these emotions are what leads to Othello’s downfall.
To feel the way Iago does is understandable. He believes he deserved that job more than Cassio and feels hurt and betrayed, “Despise me if I do not.
