Company Profile
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is the largest oil and gas exploration company in India and dominates the hydrocarbon market in India. ONGC was started by the Government of India in the mid-1950 and is state owned. ONGC is state owned but management-wise ONGC is its own private company and not run by the government. Since the GoI started ONGC in the mid 1950’s, they have sold some of its share of the company, but the GoI and two state agencies own about 85% of ONGC.
ONGC has an 84 percent market share of crude oil and gas production in India. This is a staggering lead over any competitor in India, but on a global market ONGC is not the largest oil and gas producer.
