The reason why I have chosen the mentioned title is because I am interested to find out what effect European Union (EU) standardisation has had on the Maltese hospitality industry, specifically mid-range hotels i.e. from 3-star to 4-star.

Reports after Malta’s accession to the EU suggested that “the Maltese tourist board has singularly failed to market the island’s appeal to the mass holiday market with any degree of success” (Pullicino 2005). More recently, in Easter of this year (2008) some hotels had increased bookings whereas others suffered from low occupancy rates (www.maltastar.com).

From the situation set out above, there is clearly a problem with the Maltese hospitality industry due to its stable decline. The gap for my research is that it will provide reasoning of why the Maltese hospitality industry is in decline. The hypothesis I have set to research is:
