SCHIZOPHRENIA
What is schizophrenia?
The term schizophrenia comes from the Greek words ‘schizo’ or splitting and ‘phrenia’ meaning ‘of the mind’. It is a chronic, disabling brain disorder that has been recognized throughout recorded history, although the first serious research in to it was in 1896 by a German psychiatrist, Dr Emily Kraeplin. Dr. Kraeplin called it ‘demetia praecox’, literally meaning precocious, or unusual early, mental deterioration.
Symptoms of schizophrenia
The symptoms fall in to three categories:
a) Positive symptoms, which are unusual thoughts or perceptions, hallucinations and delusions, thought disorder, and disorders movement.
b) Negative symptoms are the loss or decrease in the ability to initiate plans, speak, express emotion, or find pleasure in everyday life. These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for laziness or depression.
