Enough Is Enough
In Fay Weldon’s short story “Weekend”, the focus on Martha’s constant planning and meticulous attention to detail is a little frightening to be quite honest. It could be said that Martha has a slight case of obsessive compulsive disorder, to say the least. If she were to calm down and relax a little more she might live a happier life, her children might not be so spoiled and Martin, her husband, would surely treat her with more respect and dignity. However, Martha may not entirely be to blame for this odd disorder. There are several key contributors to her extremely exaggerated compulsion of obsession.
Martha’s mother who, “had led a secluded, suspicious life and made Martha’s childhood a chilly and lonely time”, could be one of the guilty parties. Martha’s insecurities may have been learned from her mother. Many people inherit this disorder from there parents and it seems that Weldon may be trying to imply that here.
