Cambodians by nature are self sufficient and hard workers. Only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school. With this being said, almost 90% of Cambodia’s population is illiterate. So when my parents had me, they knew I had to get an education. However, the concept of Pre-K never crossed their mind. I was born on November 2, 1985. Being that my birthday was after the cut off date, I had to start school late. I was almost six years old when I first started. Then I was registered a week into the school year. To make it worse, I started school without learning my alphabet. This is going to be a crazy start.
I was registered during lunch time; my father gave me green paper which I came to realize was 10 dollars because I received money back. My father and a nice older Caucasian lady walked me to the lunchroom. The nice lady held my hand and walked me to a long line of more children. When I turned around, my father was gone. I......
