Since British colonisation, racism has always been at the core of Australia’s history, Aborigines suffered racial oppression and dispossession, causing angst and sorrow to them. Asian migration began during the gold rush era, seeing many Chinese came to Australia and then again a large number of ‘boat people’ in the 1980s. According to various sociologists in the 19th and 20th century, racism, religion and nationalism should be fading in the era of globalisation and multiculturalism. Australia identifies itself as a multicultural society, accepting cultural diversity, encouraging equality and tolerance for everyone, yet, racism is alive and simmering, fuelled by One Nation party’s Leader Pauline Hanson’s controversial comments that Australia was ‘in danger of being swamped’ by Asians and that the Aborigines were receiving special welfare benefits.
