Zinc Finger Inhibitors and HIV Treatment

The human immunodeficiency virus, more commonly known as HIV, is a growing worldwide pandemic. HIV currently infects approximately 33.2 million individuals worldwide, with approximately 2.5 million individuals affected in 2007 alone, and claiming the lives of approximately 2.1 million individuals (in 2007). Currently, there is no known cure for this deadly disease; however, various research trials and studies are exploring possible treatments. One method in particular is the use of zinc finger inhibitors in the treatment of HIV. A study conducted by German doctor Frank-D. Goebel and colleges tested the use of a zinc finger inhibitor, particularly Azodicarbonamide (ADA), in patients with advanced aids. Despite the study still being in the trial phase, the use of zinc finger inhibitors as a method of treatment for HIV should be thoroughly considered.
