Are we a product of our environment or is the environment a product of what we are? Human beings are at risk of committing crime if given the circumstances. Therefore, we must consider that an individual can become deviant in order to acquire certain societal goals. Other individuals are more likely to engage in criminal behavior due to poor economic situations, demographic factors and poor social relationships. However, we must remember that some individuals who have engaged in criminal activities are capable of reforming their lives and adhering to the approved social norms in order to achieve the goals that each individual desires.
To help us understand why people commit crime sociologists have created the following criminological theories: Strain Theory, Differential Association Theory, Labeling Theory and Social Bond Theory. This paper will discuss each of these theories and will illustrate them with examples from book Inside Rikers by Jennifer Wynn.......
