The Renaissance

The Renaissance movement emerged from the desire to improve the human condition during times of trouble, and that desire was first manifest in the intellectually free environment of the independent city-states of Italy. The renaissance was born and developed because the political structures of the Italian city states encouraged cultural experimentation and fostered the idea that society could be reengineered according to the principles that made ancient Greece and Rome great. The word renaissance, which means rebirth is a term historians invented to describe a movement that sought to imitate and understand the culture of antiquity.
