Animal Farm

In the early twentieth century, the aftermath of World War I left countries in Europe and Asia in devastating economic ruins. The political systems of these countries began to disintegrate causing social upheaval and widespread dissatisfaction with the current forms of government and ruling classes. In 1848 Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto was published, and this book detailed his criticisms of capitalism and the inequalities of social classes. Although these ideas came before the turn of the century, Marx’s theories would soon gain following due to the grave impact of war on people throughout the world. While communism was the answer for politically distraught Russia, George Orwell described his view of the Revolution of 1917 in Animal Farm.
