Wake Up Call
Racism in the United States has been a major issue since the colonial era. Formal racial segregation was banned in the mid twentieth century, and it came to be perceived as socially unacceptable or morally repulsive. Until now, there is still segregation, prejudice, and stereotyping among different races. On September 11, 2001, there were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States. This event caused me to think about race due to the reaction and hatred that people had towards Middle Easterners. Following this event, discrimination and racially motivated violence has increased against Arab Americans and many other religious and cultural groups. We have all experienced those types of discrimination in my neighborhood, at school, and by watching television. This event caused me to think about how racism and how hatred still exists.
