Mr. Hayashi introduces Mr. Smith to Mr. Tanaka:
Hayashi: Tanaka-san, kochira wa Sumisu-san desu.
Sumisu: Hajimemashite. [Watashi wa] Sumisu desu. Dózo yoroshiku.
Tanaka: Hajimemashite. [Watashi wa] Tókyó Denki no Tanaka desu. Dózo yoroshiku.
Hayashi: Sumisu-san wa ABC no bengoshi desu.
Hayashi: Mr. Tanaka, this is Mr. Smith.
Smith: How do you do? My name is Smith. I’m very glad to meet you.
Tanaka: How do you do? I’m Tanaka from Tokyo Electric. I’m very glad to meet you.
Hayashi: Mr. Smith is ABC’s lawyer.
Grammar / Notes
Desu is Deshita was
Dewa arimasen is not Dewa arimasendeshita was not
Wa – topic marker, following noun it indicates it is the topis under discussion.
Ka – question marker, put it at end of the sentence and it becomes a question.
Hai / Iie – Yes / No, or That’s right, That’s wrong.
[Watashi wa] – you don’t need to name the subject/topic if it’s obvious.
