I understood deviance as a negative aspect of an individual’s character. I thought of it as bad behavior from a person. What is deviance, in the sociological terms the definition is any behavior that violates or goes against social norms. In each different society the definition for deviance is different widely between societies. An example is that some societies have much more strict rules regarding gender roles than we have in the United States, and in other societies rules leading to gender roles are less strict than the ones we translate. We relate deviance to crime. Crime being the breaking of authority; the law. The decisions that are about what is supposed to be legal and what is illegal are made knowingly by those people in authority who are in the legal profession and the government.
