Hip-Hop is freedom of expression in its highest form. A way for urban youth to express their pain through lyrics and beats. In the beginning hip-hop consisted of graffiti art, MCing, DJing, and breaking. But know in this decade Hip-Hop has evolved completely. New York is no longer dominating the charts; the South has taken over Hip-Hop and took it to a new place, bringing in talent from the Midwest and the West Coast diversifying Hip-Hop to the fullest.
Hip-Hop began in Bronx, New York during the 70’s, amongst African Americans and Latino communities. Pioneers like DJ Kool Herc (godfather of hip-hop), Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel and Afrikka Bambatta made music that you could dance to, displaying their skills at local block parties. Using poetic lyrics over a nice drum line made the party rock. Russell Simmons from Queens changed the game in the 80’s with his Def Jam movement.
