Deinococcus radiodurans: Its Only Weakness is CO2
Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as âthe worldâs toughest bacteria,â Deinococcus radiodurans is known to be able to withstand a thousand times more radiation than a human, making it the most radiation-resistant organism known to man. Its name means âstrange berry that withstands radiationâ and was discovered by Arthur W. Anderson at Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station in Corvallis fifty years ago in a can of spoiled ground meat that was originally sterilized by radiation. What makes this remarkable bacterium so resistant to radiation is its efficient ability to repair its own DNA after having it split into many pieces by intense exposure to radiation, restoring it to its original state in as little time as a few hours.
