People fail to realize how their everyday actions could be affecting their unborn children. There are many different types and causes of birth defects. Being a parent of 5, I feel that with the right knowledge, birth defects can be prevented. Both genetic and environmental factors can cause birth defects (March of Dimes, 09-1131-98, February 2002). Some of both of these factors can be prevented.

Up to 40,000 babies are born with some degree of alcohol-related damage each year (March of Dimes, 09-404-00, January 2005). In 1981, the United States Surgeon General issued a public health advisory that required alcohol products to have a warning label. One of the defects attributed to alcohol consumption during pregnancy is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).
