For many, the family home is not visualised as a place where ‘real crime’ takes place. However, for many others, it is a place where real threats to personal safety occur. Discuss the proposition that the home, like the street, is a dangerous place.

Traditionally, “the family� is set firmly within the “private sphere� of the social world. The ideological representation of “the family� is seen as a place of safety and furthermore the traditional family is seen as being self-regulating and any need for intervention by the state usually being required by the “dysfunctional family� and typically seen as a sign of failure. Everyday concepts of crime are usually concerned with violence by strangers in the “public sphere� such as the city or work, however, if we look at the numbers of victims of rape from the official British Crime Survey of 2000 we can see that most rapes take place in the victims own home and that women are most likely to be attacked by their......
