For many, the family home is not visualised as a place where ‘real crime’ takes place. However, for many others, it is a place where real threats to personal safety occur. Discuss the proposition that the home, like the street, is a dangerous place.

Traditionally, “the family” is set firmly within the “private sphere” of the social world. The ideological representation of “the family” is seen as a place of safety and furthermore the traditional family is seen as being self-regulating and any need for intervention by the state usually being required by the “dysfunctional family” and typically seen as a sign of failure.
