In this novel men and women are treated very differently. Men are portrayed reigning over women in the time and place the novel is set. Male dominance also gives us an idea of where and when the story takes place. We find out that the story that the story takes place somewhere tropical in the Caribbean at sometime near the 1950s.
The men in Chronicle of a Death Foretold are more or less shown as people who enjoy social freedoms and also as people who have, as the narrator states, “Urges that are sexual.” In the specific society of the novel, the men are more or less to do as they please.
