It has now been well over a hundred and fifty years since the Industrial Revolution but people still have not found where Music and subsequently Musical training fit into the modern lifestyle. Joi Carlin, in her essay entitled “Issue of Music and Schools ‘Unfinished Symphony?’”, shows a vivid image of the development of musical education throughout time. She talks about how, ever since Plato’s time, knowledge of music and musical performance skills had been integral criteria without which one could not call him/herself a “civilized human being” (p.57). The close followers of this notion were of course the high class. The rich folk would hire professional musicians/entertainers (lower class men) to educate them in ways of music. This was never considered anything but luxury for those that would on the nearest opportunity show off their skills in a setting much like one depicted in the “Pride and Prejudice” movie.......
