Psychology unit 2 The purpose of dreaming and the benefits we receive from dreaming have been a question for debate for centuries. In this assignment I am going to outline and compare the theories of Francis Crick and Graeme Mitchison and Sigmund Freud. There is no direct evidence supporting Crick and Mitchison’s theory of ‘reverse learning’ and is now regarded as a hypothetical concept but there is a indirect evidence to support there theory. When referring to the spiny anteater the Echidna, Crick and Mitchison argue that the mammal needs its ‘excessive cortical development in order to store both adaptive memories and parasitic memories, which in more highly evolved animals are disposed of during REM sleep’ (Cardwell, etal, 2004:152). The criticism thrown towards there theory is that dreams are often organized into clear stories and if the brain dreams to erase unnecessary thoughts and was in ‘offline’ mode the dreams wouldn’t be as clear and wouldn’t reoccur.......
