Extraordinary intelligence; curse and gift
What exactly is high intelligence and what does it mean to be a genius? These are two questions that I’ve been asking myself since quite some time, ever since I’ve been diagnosed with highly giftedness at age eleven. Of course there were years during which I had sort of forgotten about it, but as of late my attention was redrawn to this topic, and I decided to write an essay about it.
First, how to define intelligence? The American psychologist David Wechsler believes intelligence to be ‘the ability to act with purpose, to think rationally and to handle the environment effectively.’
A more extensive definition is : ‘a very general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience.
