Steinbeck starts the second chapter the same way he started chapter one. He introduces the new setting of the story without people He describes the bunk house, with many workers from different race and personality to create a picture in the readerâs mind.

What the author is trying to do in this quote is to show the way humans are, and how humans take people for granted and they donât realize how they hurt otherâs feelings by the things they say even if they donât mean them. George doesnât really mean the things he says to Lennie, but he does not realize what he is saying because he underestimates Lennie sometimes.
