MULTIPLE RESPONSE DATA

Multiple response data in research arise from questions that require the respondents to make one or more choices from among a restricted or unrestricted set of alternatives. This type of data is referred to in the literature as “pick any” data for which Coombs (1964), in his seminal work on theory of data, provided a “typology of data collection methods.” In keeping with the terminology from data theory, the restricted and unrestricted types of multiple response data are referred to in this article as “pick k/r” and “pick any/r,” respectively. “Pick k/r” is a variant of “pick any/r” whereby two constraints are imposed on the choice set by allowing respondents to select a predefined number of items (k) from a well defined universe (r). Collectively, al1 these types are referred to as multiple response data.
