Carlton Erickson, a distinguished professor of pharmacology and toxicology and director of the Addiction Science Research and Education Center in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin believes that chemical dependence is a chronic relapsing medical brain disease (Els, 2007). It has genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors that influence its development and manifestation. It is described as showing no self-control, continued destructive behavior and a distorted view of reality all in the realm of a continuous state of denial.
Society has a hard time understanding why one becomes addicted to drugs and how drugs change the brain to warrant obsessive-compulsive drug abuse. The addict is viewed as being morally deficient because drug abuse and addiction is seen as a social problem. “If they would just stop using drugs, their life will get better” is the statement that is often heard from society.
