Atwood Paper
Margaret Atwood’s short story “Happy Endings” is an interesting, but unconventional story where in which she gives six love story scenarios ( versions A-F) and eventually ends all of them with the death of every character. Atwood’s harsh yet realistic view of life is her main point in this piece: that life, no matter how it begins or what happens in the middle will always end to an inescapable fate of death. Davis’s critique of this piece also comes to the same conclusion - whether one lives a life of happiness or a life of sadness and despair in the end we all die.
Option A of the story follows the classic “happily ever after” plot from the beginning, middle and to the very end. John and Mary meet, fall in love, live the rest of their lives together and then eventually die.
