A Mother of Fireworks
Imagine the New Year celebration without fireworks. The health secretary, for sure, will be all smiles. No shrapnel will disable kids to count from one to ten on their fingers. No intoxicating smoke will clog the lungs of asthmatic patients. And roads won’t turn into instant landfills the following day. But who said not a soul will complain? The entire Chinese community is expected to wage social unrest and could even go to the Supreme Court to fight for their tradition of summoning noisy firecrackers. And with Filipinos having imbibed the Chinese custom, an instant EDSA people power demonstration is not hard to imagine.
The use of fireworks has become extremely popular in the Philippines. Despite aggressive anti-fireworks campaigns led by the church and the government, the moon and the stars remain to be outshone by the shower of crackers every January 1st. The people are......
