Indian Biotechnology Industry
The Indian Biotechnology Industry has come a long way from its birth in 1996. It has
crossed the $1 billion mark in 2005-06. With a growth rate of 37% percent, the industry
is now $1.45 billion; 51.5 percent of the industry revenues account for exports ($0.75bn).
While it holds a strong position in the Asia Pacific region, India constitutes around 2
percent of the global biotechnology market. The world has woken up to the fact that
India is a country that cannot be ignored while plotting the landscape of the
Biotechnology industry of the future. With the change in the patent regime and the
Government undertaking various initiatives, it is expected to touch the $5 billion mark by
2010.
The industry has close to 200 biotechnology companies. These are a mixture of Indian &
multinational companies, their subsidiaries and Joint Ventures.......
