Collins Xavier University of Louisiana Childhood Abuse and its Long Term Interpersonal and Mental Effects According to Cheng and Lo (2007) childhood physical abuse has been proven to be a strong predictor of adults’ current substance abuse, such as marijuana and drugs. While Zlotnick, Johnson, Stout, Zywiak, Johnson, and Schneider (2006) found that alcohol abuse and social dysfunctions were a result of childhood physical abuse. Yet, both drug and alcohol dependency are forms of substance abuse. One of Cheng and Lo’s (2006) hypothesis was to see if the more years a child experiences abuses leads to a greater impact substance abuse has on their life later.
