The Face of Hope
Hope has numerous connotations depending on whom you talk to. To me, hope is a belief in a positive outcome despite what the evidence indicates…a positive attitude in the face of adversity. Hope is the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel or that little spark in a person’s eye. Hope allows a person to get up out of bed each day with the courage and strength to press on, to “hopefully” overcome obstacles and/or challenges that come along.
When confronted with the diagnosis of a terminal illness, such as cancer, many patients go through various stages, ranging from denial, fear, acceptance, and hopefully hope. I have a friend, with whom I work, whose mother was diagnosed with lung cancer four months ago. One year ago, her mother had breast cancer and had a radical mastectomy and a round of chemotherapy. Despite the feelings of nausea and lack of desire to eat due to loss of taste sensation, my friend’s mother was very upbeat…very hopeful. At that......
