Buddhism in America may not be the most popular religion, but has been gaining momentum since 1990. In the year 2001 Buddhism was the fourth largest religion in America. According to G.R. Lewis, (2008), “One important development is that Buddhism climbed to be the 3rd most practiced religion in America below that of Christianity and Judaism.” Even though Buddhism has been a religion for over 2500 years Buddhism did not gain any lead way in America until around the 1950s. Some people believe in earlier explorations of the Buddhist faith. Buddhanet.net (2008), stated, “The early missions sent by the emperor Atoka to the West did not bear fruit.” Many Buddhist who immigrated to America are refugees from disagreements among the Buddhist faith. Examples of the immigrated Buddhist are the Tibetan Buddhist who came to the United States to take refugee from the war in Indochina.
