Borders are never truly impenetrable barriers between nations, no matter how many tons of concrete are poured or the number of border patrol that are employed. Humans are migratory creatures; when one lacks the very things that life necessitates, it is human instinct to go in search of it, ‘greener pastures’ as the saying goes. Despite the wishes of the more conservatives of our nation and their best efforts, the Mexico-US border will never truly block the flow of immigration. Recent policies to attempt just this, however, are not stopping the migration in the ways anticipated; rather, they are endangering the lives of many as human instinct drives them north. One such development in border policy has resulted in what is known as the Funnel Effect, a deadly symptom of a greater illness of xenophobia and paranoia-fueled regulations of border security, resulting in the deaths of countless Mexican immigrants.
