Parallel Events
Could two different events, that took place in such different time eras, be compared as almost parallel events? The play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a story about the Salem Witch Trials that took place in 1692. The instigator, Abby, can be very similarly compared to Joseph McCarthy, who was the leader and organizer of the McCarthy hearings in 1950. Both characters could be described as power hungry, egotistical people who were just looking to made a scene and have others support them and their ideas. Both events have the similarities of having the accused confess because fear motivated them, both negatively affected the accused persons’ life, and both leaders ended up having even worse conclusions to their own lives.
During both the Salem witch-hunts and the McCarthy hearings, fear acted as a major motivator for an accused person to confess to a sin the he or she most likely did not commit. In The Crucible, the fear of......
