Introduction. To engage in conversion of English Canadian identity, one must be receptive to an array of differentiating theories and be open to experience both tension and passion. In most industrialized countries of Western Europe and North America, identity and nationalism are much more straightforward to pin down. Through examining symbolic factors such as blood, race, religion, language, history or cultural values, one can generally begin to identify national harmony with ease. Canada, conversely, presents a much more difficult situation as important external and internal forces have, and continue to, hinder an unambiguous sense of English Canadian nationalism. The combination of being a British colony, in addition to living next to the cultural and economic giant of the United States, English Canadians have long faced a constant barrage of external influence in their affairs.
