Mercury is fairly old dating back to around 1500 BC. The ancient Chinese, Hindus, and Egyptians had knowledge of the element, though did not have the knowledge of Mercury being a chemical element. Mercury wasn’t considered an element until the 6th century. It is named after the planet Mercury for its silver and metallic color. Mercury’s symbol is Hg, which is derived from the Latin word “hydrargyrum.” This Latin word simply means liquid silver in which it gets its nickname quicksilver. In the late 1700’s French scientist A.L. Lavoisier declared Mercury as a metal.
Mercury has seven stable isotopes and five radioactive isotopes. The seven naturally occurring isotopes are; Hg-196, 198, 199, 200, 201, 202, and 204. The most abundant isotope is Hg-202 with 29.80% of natural abundance. Hg-194 and Hg-203 are the longest-lived radioisotopes of mercury.
