I am a member of the Puerto Rican American group and I would like to give you a little bit of information regarding this group.
First off, let me start by saying that my Puerto Rican group originated from the native Caribbean and South American people called Arawaks. These Arawaks were enslaved and exterminated by the hands of their own Spanish colonizers because these Spanish colonizers wanted to take over the island. Christopher Columbus first discovered Puerto Rico in 1493 and the island was conquered by Spain in 1509. Juan Ponce de Leon gave Puerto Rico its name upon discovering its rich port, hence the name Puerto Rico.
We migrated to the United States in the early 1900s, immediately after Puerto Rico became a protectorate of the U.S. As the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico became closer, the number of migrating Puerto Ricans to the U.S. increased. But by 1920, less than 5,000 Puerto Ricans were living in New York City and during World War I,......
