Flame Emission of Metals
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to observe the color emission of spectra from various metals. Each metal will be a metal chloride because they typically are among the more volatile metal compounds. Some metal salts were converted into chlorides.
Materials:
Solutions of different metal samples
Bunsen burner
Gas
Procedure:
In this lab we obtained 2ml. of 6M HCL in a clean test tube. Then we obtained 5-10 drops of the 7 “known” solutions in small test tubes. With the cobalt glass wire obtained from the stock room we cleaned it with HCL. We then observed the appearance, the color, and the time for the color to appear. Lastly, we obtained five drops or so to two unknowns and then five drops to the one unknown solutions.
Data Analysis
At certain temperatures of the Bunsen burner flame, metal chlorides dissociated into excited atoms. But because the......
