Pornography, an issue that was once fairly inert, has ceased to be inactive, as the argument has raged now for decades. Liberals, libertarians, and feminists have all accepted the idea that free sexual expression plays an important part in permitting a discourse that challenges traditional gender roles. The idea of liberalism that is most common in contemporary discussions is: the view that the liberal state should be neutral with regard to conceptions of the good and should neither promote nor restrict ways of life out of the belief that some are intrinsically superior or inferior to others. At its most extreme, this conception of political authority would prohibit the state from subsidizing universities rather than pornography theaters.
